Ah alright, so your saying that cigarettes arent bad for everyone? Just certain people? Alright then you show me the person who can smoke cigarettes containing carbon monoxide, tar, arsenic, cyanide, benzene, formaldehyde, methanol, acetylene, ammonia, lead etc etc and not find it detrimental to their health. Good luck.

so you tell me wheres its 100% proven that amalgam fillings are fine for every patient. you know those things have to be disposed off thoroughly because of how poisonus they are?
its not proven anywhere that every single person who smokes will get ilnesses.

everything we do in our life will effect your health somehow. go running, damage your knees. drink water, swallow a shit of fluride. eat an apple, swallow some pesticide. walk in the street, breath in car fumes.
you know me a person who walks 30 minutes a day breating car fumes who does not find it detrimental to their health.

btw cyanide is less toxic than nicotine. so is cyanide really a problem? lol.

are you sure you didnt miss your scientific proof showing that it effects everyone? i didnt fall for anything. i make my own decisions about something till you can show me proof otherwise.

because unless ur chunking out a crapload of cash on making that smoking area totally excluded from the non smoking area u WILL get smoke going to that area (IE: having a totally seperate space with the door only going out to the street).

maybe its just my town, but all the pubs i goto have very good no/smoking areas. air conditioned sucking the shit out. its no where near the bar. there is actually not a single reason you would need to go near the areas.

why do these threads always turn to shit. with no smokers calling all other smokers a mortal sinner. from what i see, the thread was started to discuss the laws them selves. not for non smokers to tell everyone else how shit they are. maybe you could make your own discussion for that?

+stuff

No one is talking about fillings here, except you. Why you are talking about fillings when the topic is smoking, I have no idea.
It doesnt have to be proven anywhere that anyone who smokes is damaging themselves and, in time, will become ill from it, because it is common sense. Which judging from your posts in this thread you seem to be lacking, or are you just being stubborn and provocative? Also cyanide is somewhat of a problem, but compared to the rest of the crap you inhale whilst smoking a cigarette, I guess it could be lowered somewhat on the problems list.

i think the point tris is tryin to make is there are other things out there that are comonly used in society that are harmfull yet they arent being banned....am i right tris?
which if that is what he is gettin at its true...an seems like smokers in a way are bein kicked in the nuts...but also i dont agree with people havin to breathe that crap if they dont want to...but i think banning something that is a common thing in socialising areas is a bit much an it does seem as though choice is being taken away from us by the government....but bein realistic you cant walk down the street without breathing toxic shit that isnt your choice....so in a way its a no win situation for either side....but thats just my opinion

ok gloves off!

I smoke! and NO I am not planning to stop or Plaster my butt with Bandaids that have warnings on them like : May cause teeth to fall out or Skin ransh of the nasty kind or something like that. I DO on the other hand not smoke when there are children about and I dont smoke if Im visiting people who have a no smoke rule.
People who are "antismoking" always come with the same line: Smoking will kill you! Well Geez Doh I think its generally proven that We all DIE!

The "no smoking" Wave came from the USA. Now lets examin that for a few minuttes. Americans can buy a GUN by just showing their driving licence in some states and then they say SMOKING might kill you? AM I the only one who gets a tick in the right eye and a case of the giggles or is there a general feeling of "WTF HAVE YOU BEEN DRINKING YOU NITWIT"!

And about the Smell..HA!. Women and Men who cant figure out NOT to bath in the BLoody Perfume NEED to be outlawed too.

We put stuff in our food that would make your hair stand on end. Cars still are the main form of transport and oil is STILL our main sorce of energy even though we know that those two factors are BIGTIME polluters. We whack Babyseals on the head and skin them alive to Look good. Teenages barf morning noon and night to stay thin. Gays still get beaten up because Boobs does nothing for them and they OUTLAW smoking?? Pardon me if I dont Give a flying Hooting barking like a mad hatter Toot.

They may outlaw smoking totaly I dont care. Ill be sitting lighting my cigarette in the first speakeasy that opens in Denmark. I may be a criminal but at least I have my moral prioreties in order.

i think that was rather well put tbh..ofc theres things you dont do as a smoker (i am a smoker myself) an it seems we bein kicked in the ass cos its like "your scum of the earth what your doing MIGHT be the cause of your death and others.....but guns are ok" which there is no sence in that to me...which is pretty much what your sayin....but what i think it boils down to...is hypocrisy....which is in govenment....in religion...all these things that claim theirself superior...but in reality they full of shit...ye maybe some non-smoker dont wanna be in a smoke filled environment...but theres always the option of goin outside..the smoker im on about...but that seems like it aint an option from what i can make out cos after all even the car park is a public place....an smoking isnt allowed there unless im mistaken...cos they on about a "no smoking in public" policy or have i got the wrong idea? either way i think there are ways round it other than what they doin....cos its ok for us to polute the planet in any other way an cause health problems with chemicals an what not...but smoking is terrible?? bullshit imo

I wonder how the non smokers would feel if they made it illegal to NOT smoke in bars.

Its impossible to prove the cause of cancer.
It can happen for a variety of reasons, however it has been proven that the chemicals in smoke DO increase dramaticly the chances of cancer.
On Roy Castles autopsy it would have been noted as cancer, nobody can prove what the exact cause of it was. However if we use the civil court system, on the ballance of probabilities, it probably was the smoky clubs that caused his cancer that ultimatly lead to his death.

Also, dimse, you whine on about all the other things that are wrong in society, as many smokers do to try and divert attention from whats being discussed.
OMG THE ICE SHEETS ARE MELTING LETS FORGET ABOUT SMOKING!
Sadly, we're discussing smoking in this thread.

i was a smoker allso for a long time.... and i got fed up of stinking like ashtray (SP!!!??). i just quit one day and never looked back (even tho sometimes id like a smoke really bad and the need to smoke is there allmost evry day).

but i think there should be a place in evry bar where ppl could smoke. becouse ppl go to pubs to relax. and if they want to smoke, they should be allowed, but in a sertain place.

but in restaraunts i dont like it much when ppl smoke there. usually when u go to an restaraunt, ur wearing bit better clothes and its damn annoying to get them to smell like a ashtray

thas how i feel :p

imo that is not correct. how can something be common sense if its not 100% true to begin with?

and people complaining about their clothes stinking. wtf, dont you wash your clothes after a night out? lol :p.

I thought this thread was discussing the banning of smoking, not the habit of smoking.
My opinion is.. makes no difference to me.. the stuff i smoke you cant smoke in pubs anyway :)
The real point is... does everyone like the way the government, whom we elected, decides what is best for us without consultation or information as to how they have reached their decisions. Their own figures are sketchy at best on what good it will achieve in terms of public health. But they have decided it is right so that is what will happen. Democracy? We voted them in but did anyone realise they would be wasting our time with this.
If public health is so high on the agenda then an alcohol ban must be on the way very soon, as i am pretty sure drink related deaths outway passive related smoking deaths by far.
Or is it that a few ministers got together who have a real dislike for smoking and decided this is what would happen, regardless of medical or public opinion.
A friend of mine, who researchs smoking related diseases in Rome, said that if you are going to smoke, smoke through a water pipe... or a quality bong :) .. as it seems the heat of the smoke is what causes a lot of the problems (i am not a lung geek like him so i cant elaborate). He thinks that passive smoking is no different to walking down a normal high street and breathing in the various fumes you will encounter. When he was at Oxford doing research he offered this evidence to the government and was given a firm 'thanks, dont call us we will call you' response.

my girlfriend works in a pub and also a casino, the latter not being subject to the ban. Her opinion is that it makes no difference to her as she knew what she was doing when she applied for both jobs.

It makes me wonder just who the government had in mind when decided on this course of action . Is it a smokescreen to hide the fact that they arent doing very well lately domestically or economically and the 'we hate smoking/smokers' brigade are an easy group to please ?

Lets face a few facts that have been broached so far:

Smoking isn't the biggest problem this country has, there are faaar more important issues to be worried about, but they managed to confuse and baffle the idiot voter with the Hunting Ban for almost 3 years, so it shoudl become even more obvious as to the agenda that this goverment has turned too since it failed to produce on any of the promises it made - as long as it satisfies the loudest whiners, wether they be in the majority or not, then it will appear to them few to be doing a great job. Equally, those people who bury their heads in the sand over issues like increased use of crack cocaine, homophobia, the widening gap between religions and the apparent acceptance by some to use violence to try to force an opinion, see these minor rulings as fantastic for their country.

Add a few other considerations - smoking will NOT be banned in the House of Commons bar. One rule for them, one ru... yada yada, you can see where im goin with this one.

As a cyclist my health is far more adversly affected by selfishness and lack of consideration by car drivers - their fumes choke me, their lack of awareness and consideration could mean that by 6 o'clock tonight i will be dead under the wheels. The minute i dare open my mouth about my likely violent death on the road, the chance that i will end up a smear on the pavement, i find drivers treat me like i am the actual scum that crawled out of the gutter and how f*ckin DARE i suggest that i have as much right to the surface of this planet as they do...

It's just all bullshit - as smokers we are an easy target from pretty much every angle of society. Whether they take the moral, hygene or health stance, they believe they have the right to TELL me what i am not allowed to do. Well, try starting a campaign to have petrol and diesel cars banned in areas near schools or whatnot and you'd be laughed out of the room.

As long as i have to pay tax on my ciggarettes, am smoking considerately and not hunting down packs of anti/non-smokers to piss them off, like they feel the need to do to me at every given opportunity, i will smoke when the mood takes me.

Anti-smokers - If you have enough time to come whine and bitch at me for something which doesn't concern or affect you at the time, then maybe your lives are lacking something? Fill that time with a more exciting, fun activity and i'm pretty sure me having a smoke would fade away into a distant memory...

Oh, and those saying it's for the good of MY health, don't see you runnin up to fat people and telling them to stop eating cakes n pies... :m00:

Something i have wondered though is why the government has never really explored the option of just giving landlords the choice? Some pubs have been non-smoking for years, some have smoking areas (usually downstairs from an open Non-smoking area, which is a bit whacky, but hey ho), some are just plain ol' smokin bars where you can chuff where you like.

The main arguments i've heard are "But the staff who work there should be able to work without fear of inhaling second hand smoke!" Yeah, but if landlords are allowed to chose whether their bar is smoking or not, then if you don't want to work in a smokey bar, get a job in a non-smoking one!!

Didnt read all the replys cos there are to many...

But they did consider giving owners the choice... like they have at the moment... but the fact is that hardly any pubs will chose to be non-smoking.. purley becaus it cuts out the whole business of smokers who drink (and there is a lot of them) y having a blanket ban they keep the playing field level...

You dont have to sacrifice 60% of your business to be non-smoking while the pub next door which allows smoking gets all of that business...

I am a smoker by the way :)

Same old arguments from both sides. I might aswell chip in.

first off I am a non smoker (not tried it once).

I have no problem with people smoking, if they want to run the risk of causing themselves bodily harm its there choice. I have no Scientific proof that passove smoking will cause me any harm at all. However after a casual lunchtime out with friends I go back to work and my clothes stink, my hair stinks and my skin stinks. If I am out at the local watching the football by the time I go home my throat will be dry and itchy from the smoke.

So taking this into consideration I can honestly say passive smoking is no good for me at all. I have no problems with washing my clothes after a night out, however if I end up somewhere I did not expect to and wake up the next day it will be nice to know I can go home in clothes that dont smell like they actually smoke. My shit stinks but I dont cover you in it.

I do believe the landlord making the decision is a good idea, but as already mentioned unless they pay for proper equipment which will suck the shit from the air its dont really work to good. Most of the places you go to are not even separated properly, having 2 yards space between smoking and non smoking with a little no smoking sign is not enough. If the landlord was going to install new kit the prices would no doubt go up.

Just because it isnt proven to have a bad affect on everyone does not mean that they should be subjected to it.

I just wish they would stop people that are suffering from smoke related issues wasting the time and money of the NHS. Smokers always say you die anyways but when they find out the have cancer and have to stop smoking they cry like fuck and regret it and take up a hospital bed that someone more important could use.

someone more important? who are you to decide who is more important than anyone else?
going from what you say, only people with genetic problems causing an illness should be admitted to a hospital bed. after all, they are the only people who didnt bring an illness onto them selves.

3 pubs close to were I live went non smoking late last year. They are now busier for it, parents can take there children in for some food without coming out stinking. Yes there are alot of smokers but alot of families would rather not eat in an ashtray.

Ah nice exception for you... In Basingstoke, population 200,000 ish... we have... Zero non-smoking pubs :( One pub tried it last year but quickly changed thier mind when they nearly went out of business!

Yes i been in a pub where the smoke was so bad i couldnt breath, did i complain to my MP? no i went to the pub next door, easy as that

Now if i am chatting to a mate i will need to go outside with him while he has a fag. That inconvieniences me aswell as the smoker

You are so wrong if I run you over its not your fault. People do fall ill and you know this, instead you talk big like you usually do. I would rather a bed go to someone who has been shot, stabbed or fell over. instead of someone who has smoked and is now having problems with their lungs because of this. I have no sympathy for anyone causing self harm. If you wanna slash your wrists do it fucking properly and stay hidden so you cant get found, dont do it then get discovered and waste hospital time.

I might actually agree with you sometimes but I recall in the last no smoking discussion you threatened to go out of your way and blow smoke in every non smokers face. So I have come to the conlusion you are infact a cock.

i thought i added a :m00: on that, to show im not entirely serious. i do have more important things to do ;)

i dont know what your experience is with working in a hospital. ive never done it so can only speculate how it works. imo though, i think if someone is run over or shot they will get a bed regardless of who else is there.

against what we may think, in our type of society everyone is entitled to help. no matter what they did to them selves.
