Mines very minimal to be honest, no TV/DVD in here at the mo... all cheaper stuff:

Marantz SR4400 Amp
Sony CDP-XE330 CD Player
Monitor Audio Bronze B2 Speakers (in Beech :p)
Gale XL315 Speaker Cable (for now)
QED Qunex 1 and Profigold Interconnects
2 x Citronic PD45 Ultima DJ Record Decks
Gemini PS540i mixer
Limit CDJ-200A Desktop DJ CD player
PC is linked up to it all too for future production plus set recording and has Cambridge Audio CSW100 speakers (2xSatellite and a Subwoofer) Spec is 3.2GHz P4, 1 gig RAM, Videologic Sonic Fury Sound Card

*copy and paste*

When I move out I'm gonna have a nicer system, nowt too OTT as I'm not minted lol... more into tunes than films though I guess. Everytime I buy something new it sounds pants thanks to 3x3m room, so I have "downgraded" to this lot for now. Some nice systems you lot have!

The projector itself (Optoma H30) cost me £1200 in March '04, so it's not exactly new anymore. The equivalent Optoma H30A can be had for about £1000 inc vat.

The screen is a home made effort (screens can cost up to £1k), I positioned all the kit and shone the picture onto the wall, marking and masking the area required. A black border was painted around the screen and the screen itself was painted mid-grey. I experimented with a dark grey and white, with mid grey being the best between solid blacks and good white levels. White, although great for bright pictures, looked very dark grey during a "black" bit in the film.

Lord of The Rings: TT Battle for Helm's Deep is one of the best tests for dark/black detailing, along with The Matrix.

By doing it this way, I could get exactly what I wanted and the best out of the projector instead of shelling ~£500 for a screen and thinking "hmmm, wish I had bought a grey one" :).

sub0r is essential ! ... not for music imo

Precisely. I'm hardly a home cinema freak, my kit is solely used for music and with that you can do just as much damage with a meaty amp and a good pair of floorstanders as you can with a sub.

Sanyo Z2 Projector
Ruark Prologue One Floorstanding Speakers
Definitive Rear Surround Speakers
Arcam Alpha 7 CD Player
Pioneer DVR-3100 DVD Recorder
Sky+
Old Skool B&O MX4500

Dont really use the CD player much hence the basic model still.

I watch films and listen to music through XBMC mainly

TV is good even though its stupidly old but i will need a new one soon. Like the look of that Hitachi Clown. Im after a smaller TV as i have the projector but it needs to be HD.

Indeed, if you're gunning for HD make sure it has HDMI/DVI for Sky's HD service in 2006. To the best of my knowledge, component video won't cut it 'cos of Sky's copy protection thingy?

From what i remember reading, only HDMI will work with the copy protection encoding. Sure it will be easily circumvented i the same way as macrovision was.

Yeah it will be for HD Sky. Also I output in component from my 2 consoles but my TV doesnt support the signal so i have to use the projector everytime i play a game.

The SR8500 is fantastic though and does upscaling

check out the back of it

HDMI/DVI are compatible, just differing connectors iirc (can buy convertors to and from each).

Doesnt HDMI also carry digital audio though? Whereas DVI only carries video.

Yeah that's true, so if you're using DVI you need to make alternative arrangements for audio, i would imagine.

About to get my new tv (next few weeks). Changed my mind about Panasonic, want this one: Philips 37PF9830. Its the only set that I've found that runs proper (1080p) HD, has HDMI and DVI (most sets seem to have one input which is going to be a pain in the arse with a Sky HD box and a next gen console). My only concern is reliability; I haven't had the greatest experience with Philips kit in the past. Thoughts?

Looks like a brilliant telly Gaff, how much is that costing if you don't mind me asking? Quite fancy something like that soon! Nice to see it has DVI and HDMI for Sky's HD service.

One thing though, 1080p is not actually a recognised progressive format, only 1280*720 is a progressive scan format (iirc) and 1920*1080 is an interlaced format however I understand there is a 1920*1080 progressive format/standard pencilled in for the future - nice to support (unless Sky have confirmed they'll be using it sooner?)

for reference

Best price I've found is about GBP2300. There's a 42 inch version as well but it would swamp my living room; 37 inch is pushing it.

I understand about 1080p not being used in HD broadcasts etc. but I gather PS3/Blu-Ray will offer native 1080p and I'm trying to buy a telly as futureproof as possible (which is also why I'm going LCD rather than plasma). At the moment you have a bit of a wierd situation where you've got to strike a balance between the best 'flavours' of HD for broadcast, packaged movies (be it Blu-Ray or HDDVD) and next-gen games; what's perfect for one thing is compromised for another.

In an ideal world this TV would have two HDMI inputs and a DVI, but no-one's at that stage yet. Of course, If I was being sensible, I'd wait another year and probably get the same quality of kit for 2/3 the price, but I'm not paying for (most) of this so screw it :)
