Tough one that. I presume it used to work?

In that situation I normally strip it down to the bare minimum - unplug all hard disks and cables, take out all cards cept the graphics card (use onboard if u have it), unplug all peripheral fans (just have the cpu and chipset ones going), use only one known good stick of ram and see if it posts.

Check that the cpu fan is spinning up (many motherboards wont post if they detect or think that the cpu fan is knackered).

If it doesnt - try a different stick of ram and a different graphics card. If it still doesnt work its either the cpu, the motherboard or the powersupply.

So powersupply is the next easiest thing to test - you can get tester units for about £7 - or if you have a spare try that.

Still doesnt work - your left with cpu or mobo. Take both out and do a very close visual and sniff check looking for leaking capacitors and scorching. This may immediately give you a clue as to which one is knackered.

If still no luck you are in the realm of using spare mobos and processors to find the culprit.

Good luck!

Oh, from experience sudden inability to post if ive not changed anything or otherwise been mucking around in the case in a previously working system has been down to a power supply gone bad.

Oh important that you let us know what fans are working and what (if any) fans arnt. This can give a clue to if the power supply has flaked out on one of its rails.

I dont really feel comfortable with fuckin around with internal parts as i'm not up on the whole layout of it all and i dont wanna do more harm than good. but am i right in thinking (when configured to do it) the mobo will make a beep sound before everything boots up?(used to get that before and the monitor would make a lil noise an all would be fine) gonna get a new system soon anyway....i guess i'll just see if i can get someone thats more up on the subject to take a look at it.

Yeah the mobo's make a beep sound, if its one short beep it means everything is fine to boot from bios and then your OS starts to kick in.

If not comfortable going tinkering with everything, i'd at least check the ram. You can't really harm much by just reseating ram And check your cpu fan isn't clogged up.

what the deuce !

The CPU fan has nothing to do with anything really. If it's plugged in to the mobo, it will spin regardless of what's on the mobo and what isn't.

To me it sounds that your mobo has kicked the curb.

As crom said, in more cases then not, it's the power supply which will be giving you problems, especially as a gamer whereby the power useage is constantly fluctuating a lot.

To put it into perspective, In the last 3 years, I've gone through 3 power supplies, each of which caused the same problem you've got at the moment.

Always unplug from the mains before touching your computer and make sure no lights are on on the motherboard otherwise you're likely to screw something up. Putting the fronts and backs of your hands on a wall is generally good enough to get rid of most static from your hands (it isn't a fool proof method however). I'd personally start by unplugging any cd/dvd drives you have, then try running it again.

Two of the three power supplies which broke with me, slowly deteriorated so unplugging a device would make it work for a couple of days then it'd go down again. If it works after unplugging the cd/dvd drives, it's more then likely an issue with the power supply and you can pick up high powered ones pretty cheaply these days (£30 is the higher end of them for the most part).

Poon is on a distinguished road
Don't buy a cheap power supply, its half of the reason why most people get random crashs and blue screens, spend £50 at least and get one with a decent name (BFG OCZ Antec etc)

If you dont have clean power going in then you're reliant on your mobo to filter it out for you, that and cheap ones break a lot.
