Oblivion tweak guide

For those who are having problems getting half decent frame rates, have a nosey at this...

http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html

...seems to have helped alot of people squeeze out an extra 10fps+ and made the game playable.

I've tried various tweeks and i've finally gotten the game to be almost playable with gfx looking about 5 years older than morrowwind at 800x600 (i used to get playable framerates with morrowind at 1600x1200) which makes me cry. My gfx card is rather sucky and it's a cutting edge game in terms of gfx, but i think they are shooting themselves in the foot by making it so reliant on top of the range hardware even to make it vaguely playable!

I think it's the sort of game that people will play for AGES if Morrowind is anything to go by so I think while you may struggle to get it to look pretty at a decent frame rate now, in 6 months or more you may find yourself with a better rig and still playing the game.

Gef will become famous soon enough
Just turn the grass off, it instantly doubles your framerate.. I get proper Quake style framerate (40-50) outdoors now, can kite things properly while turning them into pincushions.

Aye, best thing to do for us with somewhat lacking systems is to disable all shadows and set grass distance to 0.
Also set texture detail to medium which still looks nice, and no AA. With those changes i get fully playable fps at 1280x1024, full viewdistance, distant trees, distant buildings, objects and npc's, as well as reflective water. Using a radeon9800pro128meg, 1gig ram, 2.8ghz p4.

Only real problem i have is that my sound gets distorted or removed if i start the game after having used winamp or watched a movie etc. Apparently its because of FFDshow, a codec i have installed for movies etc, which conflicts with Oblivion. Dont want to remove it though so have to restart the comp if i wanna play Oblivion.

I've tried various things, i need a new gfx card though I have an FX5600 which isn't supported (they changed their minds after release and said the only FX they would support was the 5700) there are a lot of tweaks to try to get it to work and a lot of people are trying different things, but it looks gash and crashes a lot. I'm probably going to shelve it till the nvidia 7600 has been out 6 months and comes down in price i think.

If you edit the oblivion.ini and change the various light LOD's you can have a reasonable frame rate until you get too close to a flame.

Unforutnately anyting with a torch will kill your computer.

I found the best tweak was buying a 6800GS to replace my 5600UT.

FX cards just don't get along with oblivion.

didn't even get that far - the whole "nothing you do actually matters" level scaling along with the irritating interface finally got the better of me.

Was really into it for a few days till I realised that increasing my armourcrafting made that goblin get harder...

and that there was no point exploring because I'd find the same monsters everywhere (all nicely suited to beat the snot out of my level char of course but all exactly the same)

There's apparently some plugins to help this but I cba now other things to do addiction cured
