I assume you run Windows XP ?
On the Blue screen ( BSOD! - Blue screen of death ) theres an Error ID. If you write that down on a piece of paper and search on Microsuck for that code, then you should get an explernation of where the problem was caused. Im pretty sure that its not your BIOS that needs an update, but more a RAM problem.. Either the system RAM or the RAM on your GFX card, and if its the gfx card then you have a problem ^^ Do you have another gfx card somewhere that you can test with ? ( remember to uninstall the old GFX drivers before removing the card if you want to be on the safe side )

I'm getting a similar problem on my PC. Run XP Pro and have a Geo 5200 128MB gfx card. Usually with DAoC, but in most programs screen will just freeze and I have to reboot. I've diagnosed this down to the gfx card overheating (only started with the recent spate of hot weather), so now trying to convince the wife I need to get a new base unit!
(well, good opportunity to upgrade my whole system to a Core 2 or higher!)

Check the heat sink on the graphics card is *tight*.
I had a similar problem with my 6800 and it turned out that right out of the box the heat sink was not as tight as it could be. I tightened it up and the problems stopped immediately. I was showing similar symptoms. I'd also gone through a lot of the checks you've tried. Hope this helps.

hmm ... well this is odd.
I have this problem also and know of 2 other people that have it too. I put it down to video card overheating as well, although it has run fine for nearly 2 years. This has only started happening over the last 2 weeks. So the question on my mind is, could there be any other reason for it or is it just a coincidence that we all have the same issue?

Had the same crap on my pc and in the end after changing gfx, ram, soundcard, and fans, discovered it was my motherboard.

Components expand as they are heated (ie when they are switched on) and contract as they cool (when everything is shut down).
Over time they can become loose, even if its only by the tiniest amount. This can lead to memory or adapter cards needing to be reseated that have been in place a very long time. If the heat sink (note I do not say fan) on a graphics card is not very firmly pressed against the processor(s) on the card, it will not do its job at all properly. I've seen this happen before on PCs where they haven't even been modified since original purchase. I'm not saying its what is happening here but its a situation I've seen crop up from time to time. |
