Help with Diablo 2

Asking this here since there was a big Diablo hype some weeks ago, and i'm getting desperate.

A while ago i bought a second copy of Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction so i could play the game online with my gf. After some time my disc exploded in my drive (destroying both itself and the drive), and now we're left with two CD keys, two installations, but only one disc which means only one of us can play at the time. I haven't been able to find any no-CD software for LoD , so i was wondering... am i fucked, or does anyone know of a no-CD that lets you play the game over battle.net? It doesn't seem fair that i should have to buy the game a third time. If this question is somehow against the CoC, please accept my apologies and delete this post.

If I remember correctly (and i'm going back several years here) I think you used to only need the CD in the drive while the game was booting up..

load up game 1.
remove disk, put in PC 2.
load up game 2.

Might of changed, or i'm remembering wrong but i'd try it as a first step.

If I recall correctly, D2s copy protection was a burnt in ring around the CD. You can play without the CD though without resorting to cracks, just copy the d2music.mpq file to your D2 folder from the CD as that's all it needs the CD in the drive for. You'll need the CD in the drive to start it but once it's launched you can take the CD out again. Obviously you still need a unique licence key to connect to b.net.

You'll also need the CD in the drive when changing acts for the first time (it uses it to load the cut scenes). Not sure if copying the d2music.mpq file as suggested stops you needing that however.
