Help me, I'm shit.

Just bought the game, started a new game about 20 times already. I've tried nearly every character for like 2 minutes and I just suck. Always run out of potions and can't afford to buy more. Can anyone recommend a good character setup which would suit a newbie? I tried mages but they are a bit to complicated.

How simple do you want?

Here is my monk template thich I stole from somewhere else.

Half-Orc, Lawful Anything
str 18 (finish at 32)
dex 15
con 14
int 6
wis 14
cha 6

Stat Increases: Strength at every chance

Skills: Discipline every level, Tumble every level.

Feats:

1. Toughness
3. Weapon Focus (Unarmed Strike)
6. Circle Kick
9. Power Attack
12.. Improved Critical (Unarmed Strike)
15. Great Cleave
18. Blind Fight
21. Epic Weapn Focus (Unarmed Strike)
24. Overwhelming Critical (Unarmed Strike)
25. Armour Skin
27. Great Strength I
30. Devastating Critical (Unarmed Strike), Improved Spell Resistance I
33. Great Strength II
35. Improved Spell Resistance II
36. Great Strength III
39. Great Strength IV
40. Improved Spell Resistance III

Equipment: Monk stuff...

Magical Item Preferences: Str, Wis, Dex, Con boosting items (that order of preference), AC boosting items, physical and elemental Damage resistance.

You'll have to be careful at first, but once you get to higher levels, you'll be unstoppable. Unlike a normal monk, you don't have any stealth skills, but if you just wade into combat, activate Flurry of Blows, and watch your health bar you'll be fine. Once you get to 6th level, you'll have Improved Knockdown, which you should use whenever you fight mages/any single bad guy. Knock them over, then hit them on the ground.

and being a monk you'll find that you will soon have a huge amount of gold that you can't really spend on kit. ergo that goes into potions and medkits for the few times something will actually damage you. that something usually being very big and very nasty

With that monk character, I completed HoU without breaking a sweat until the final bad guy. I had to use a few heal potions again

The dark elf queen was a joke with that monk. One knockdown, and it was pretty much over.

just to compare with that in public, my paladin/COT had a seriously hard time in HoU. Will and I have talked about this in the past, and tbh I think it's down to what patch you were running at the time, as I had to upspec my char (ie cheat with uber str and dex) to get anywhere. last time I'll play as a human though I kid you not :/

If you get the demon's true name, you don't have to fight him. The only way you can do that is to find the Knower of Names true name, and order her to give you his. Which I think is only possible if she happens to be the true love of the Sleeping Man.

You should have seen my monk when he was transformed into an earth elemental. Str 44 leads to a lot of punch damage...and I got to keep all my monks skills and extra attacks.

My rogue/shadowdancer was fun... Walk into a fight, hit hide, get off a couple of sneak attacks, hide, sneak attacks, etc.

Too bad I shelved the game. I bloody love the look of these NWN/Baldurs Gate style games, they sound and look so fricking cool. Then I buy them and am unable to play for more than about 10 minutes without dying. The only one I was any good at was Planescape : Torment.

that's why you have to stick with it matey once you've leveled up a tad anything coming near you automagically dies! it's the pesky things that *don't* insta-die that you have to watch for
