Half life episode one

Hi, it's me with the noob questions again.

HLE1 - Is it stand alone?

Can I buy it and install it on my son's PC, get steam on there and download Counter-strike etc?

Only I bought another copy of original half-life ages ago to do this and endured loads of serial number dramas.

Any help appreciated

Yes but should I download it with Dan's ID so I get another instance of source, so Dan can play CS at the same time as me?

If my hard drive ever goes I'll be buggered as I don't know how to back-up my Half life 2.

Can I write it to a DVD?

This is probably getting tiring now, but bear with me.

If I have half life 2 on my pc and half life episode 1 on Dan's PC, how do I get to play episode 1 on my PC?

Also, if I lose my username and password for Steam, then I assume I wouldn't be able to download another version of HL2 (or EP1) on a new PC if my hard drive fails?

You cant, each pc , and therefore each steam id is separate and must be paid for indevidually. on the bright side you both get to play css at the same time instead of constantly swapping like a big ol tightwad

Dan's PC is not as good as minethough so I want to play EP1 on mine. Can't I play EP1 on it as long as it's not at the same time as Dan is or something?
