Lester has a spectacular aura aboutLester has a spectacular aura about
backup steam/CS etc

I have a premonition that something awful is going to happen to my hard drive. If I just copy my Steam folder to a DVD and put it on a new one will CS and HL2 work? if not, what do I do?

cheers

What I would do is copy the .gcf files located in the Steam/Steamapps folder to a DVD...then do a fresh install and copy the files back to this folder, as this is where the game data is contained. Also, if you have any custom .cfg files you could copy them too.

A fresh install from where though? Sorry to sound a noob, but I downloaded HL2 and CS, so do I have to go through that again (i.e. 20 hours of downloading) or do I have the install files somewhere on my PC?

I can't remember the exact way of backing up, but you can whack 'steam://backup' into your browser window and a backup dialogue will appear for steam. You choose where you want the files to go then burn that folder to cd/dvd. When you want the files put back you can just place them into the steam dir (somewhere )

Well, a fresh install on your new hard-drive The files which Steam downloads to play the games are the aforementioned .gcf files. You can download the Steam installation from their website, have a fresh installation...and instead of having to download the games all over again...just copy the .gcf files to the Steam/Steamapps folder and double click on the games, and it shouldn't have to download anything if they are up to date when you put them on DVD. Sorry if I'm not making this clear enough

There is a built in backup option into Steam, just click on 'Play Games' in the main menu, then right click on any game and click 'Backup game files...' which will backup them up...I'm not sure how this works or anything though
