Thinking of buying a 360

I'm currently considering buying a xbox 360
And the thing is i havent owned a console since my dear super nintendo (wich is still alive! WOOT!) from back in the days and alot of things have changed since then

I got a couple of questions..

Games: i really enjoy street racing games, like the need for speed series on ps2. Can you play theese games with other players on the net with the xbox live thingy?

Xbox live thingy: Is it expensive or can you just hook it up to your router or something?

I tried to do a little of reading on this but it only got me confused

To play online you have to have an xbox live gold subscription which is £35-40 a year.
All consoles let you download demos and game trailers for free.
All games have multiplayer online play and the 360 has built in voice chat too.
You can hook it up to your router.

If you get one, before you go and shell out £35-£40 for a gold membership, just make your gamercard etc. You get a free month with every Xbox Live account you make.
