Stratgeic racing game?

A mate of mine's got a PS3 and is after a racing game with a bit of depth.
I'm not into many racing games myself so I thought I'd ask you guys if anything fits the bill.

He says he's not bothered what type of racing it is (street, rally etc) but would like to be able to heavily customise the cars and not just their looks. He'd also like to have an on going rewards scale. e.g. win a race, get money, employ pit crew, research new engine technology etc etc.

Is there anything like this out there?

I guess a bit like them football manager games but you get to do the races too?

But as for consoles you could argue the Gran Turismo series.

I don't think there is anything that ticks all those boxes at the moment, but I'd agree with PLightstar on GT and possible GRID. For the future, keep an eye out for Codemaster's Formula 1 licencsed game that is, supposedly, going to be part sim, part arcade racer.

hmm. i wouldn't mind a F1 racing simulator ala championship manager myself tbh.

develop a car, hire a pit crew and a semi crap driver and work my way up from there kinda sounds like fun
