I have a friend..

Who is soon to become the big 40.
I have known her for nearly 20 years. She has had a hard life. Horrible parents... snooty brother... not a lot of money...no luck with men... husband who nearly caused her a breakdown before he left her to live with another woman...she has a much wanted child who has never actually seen her scummy Dad... friends who have mostly moved away... So she is a working, single mum who struggles.
She is someone who has been at all the pivotal moments in my life. We can go for years without seeing each other, but then pick up immediately where we left off. You know what its like.
My best girlfriend Sam (the other one of us -deemed 'the Witches of Eastwick' by an ex) had the idea of us organising a surprise party for her. Nothing fancy, just a hall/pub in the day for her friends and all the kids. Then at night the 'girls' are going to hit the town and re-visit all our old haunts where we were once notorious.
So 4 of us have got together to basically attempt to give her a cool celebration and split the cost. In the midst of the arrangments, it has been suggested that I say 'a few words' about what Debs means to us.
Gulp. Any tips...funny poems/ memories -or what? Bit stuck really to know what to say? Am used to speaking in public, so not worried at all about that bit -just that I may get all teary, I guess.

This must have been the outing that's causing such controversy? Sounds like a good idea for the birthday tho.
