I love the way this man writes, I really like the way he sees how a kids mind works because tbh when I was a nipper I used to think just like the subjects in his books.
This is the first of the two books (hucks book comes after but I read them arse about face) and it isn't entirely necessary t read them in order but certain things will be revealed sooner than is beneficial to the reader if you read Huck first.
In this story we get to meet and greet all the folks in Toms life, the gals he loves, the boys he calls mortal enemies and those who are his bosom friends. Tom gets in to all kinds of scrapes and tries to use his knowledge of the supernatural to get him out of them but these don't seem to work... despite someone telling him they would Oo
This book is definately worth reading in the hot summer days it is beautifully written and the descriptions are great, the use of the N word to decsribe the slaves at the time was a word of the time but if you are easily offended I suggest you give it a miss.
The whole book is charming but the one bit that had me LOL'ing (on a train!) was the school examination and the fate of the master...his toupee, the ministrations of the sign writers son and the cat on a rope. I'll say no more but it is well worth reading the book if just for that one scene alone.
