Animes you might otherwise not see.
Alright, so i know we've got quite a few peeps here, who enjoy anime. And from time to time, we have people asking for anime suggestions. So i decided to do short reviews of animes you might not otherwise watch.
There is the "must see" lineup of anime most people get. (Not that i disagree. They are fantastic.)
Naruto
Bleach
Hellsing
Trigun
Ghost in the shell
Death Note
Cowboy Bebob
Samurai Champloo
Neon Genesis
Robotech
Full Metal Alchemist
Wolfs Rain
etc etc. You know the drill.
But i thought i'd do short reviews of some of the anime you might never have heard of, or even skipped because of the name or description.
First off; Yakitate!! Japan; 69 eps [Complete]
This was a surprisingly entertaining anime, despite what it is about... baking bread.
We follow the kindhearted, yet not overly intelligent Azuma Kuzama, who is a bread baking savant, on a quest to create an ubar japanese bread. He joins the prestigious bread company Pantasia (Pan. Being the japanese word for bread.) The "battle-system" is the bread baking battles that take place. And most of the humour comes in the form of peoples reaction to the bread. It has a certain "wtf?! factor" but that only add's to the fun.
There is some puns that your wont get, unless you speak japanese. But most of them aren't that funny to begin with, so you wont be missing out too much.
Eyeshield 21; 145 eps. [Complete]
This anime is about Japanese highschool american football. The protagonist is the small, timid Kobayakawa Sena, who upon entering the Deimon high school, is coincidently recruited for the american football team, lead by the scary QB Hiruma, a very shrewd tactition with a surprising arsenal of weapons, both litterally and figuratively.
Hiruma discovers Senas talent for running when he sees him being chased by bullies.
To stop the other clubs from trying to recruit him, Hiruma makes poor Sena wear an eyeshield to hide his identity, and let him be known purely by the name Eyshield 21. 21 obviously being his number as runningback.
Great series, with some good classic humour and great sporting rivalries.
Prince of Tennis; 178 episodes + 19 OVA's that makes up the last tournament. [Complete]
I never liked tenis irl. So i hesitated when i was first introduced to it. But it became one of my favorites. The cast of characters in this anime, is fantastic, and really makes the show.
Main character is the young, stoic, slightly arrogant Echizen Ryoma. A freshman at the Seigaku school, where they quickly discover his amazing tennis talent, which he has from his father; known in his tennis days as "Samurai Nanjiro"
Seigaku is fighting to win the national championship tournament as the road is littered with comedy and drama. The battles in this, is obviously the tennis matches, that get progressively more unrealistic as the series progress. This is honestly an anime that is truly greater than i can make it sound.
Ouran High Host Club; 26 eps. [Complete] (i'm so gay for liking that show);
Now, this was quite a change for me.
There is no sort of battling going on in this. It's a romantic comedy drama. And when i first got my hands on it, i flat out refused to watch it. As the first thing i saw was the opening theme. And the first frames of the opening theme, is the cast, on a pink background.. with the lyrics "Kiss kiss, fall in love." But as i was really bored, later that week, i decided to give it a shot. And i'm really glad i did.
The protagonist is the polite, intelligent Fujioka Haruhi, a commoner who gets into a high class school on a scholarship, and by pure coincidence joins the Host Club. Consisting of an eclectic cast of handsome men, who all has their specific character trait, a trait that is used to turn up the heat of Ouran High's female population.
For the first many episodes, it's much like a sit com, where it's individual stand alone stories, that is rounded off at the end of the episodes. But although the story is not pushed forward from the start. The relationships and character development is continiously advanced. It's very very well written and well drawn.
And besides all the awesome drama, romance, is the comedy. The whole thing features, cross dressing, homosexuality, sexually suggestive themes and even borderline incestuous relations. Sounds odd, and it is. But it's funny and like Yakitate!! Japan. Has that wonderfull "wtf?! factor" If you can get over your machoness, and get in touch with your feminine side. This is a must see.
I'll probably do a few more. But for now, check those out

well, yeah, more or less. you get dropped in about a third of the way into the actual story, if you know what I mean. A lot of things have already happened, and the chars already act on that without the viewer being in the know.
I got it off a mate, who was pleased with the style it was drawn in: somewhat dragon-ball Z, but without the chibiness or facefaulting. The story's basically about a jail-break.Posted 10th April 2008 at 01:51 PM by TdC
