If you already have a spyware infection, which it sounds like you have, ive found the general spyware removers like adaware etc to be pretty close to useless, except in one respect - they do tell you what you have.
With that information, google the name of the spyware and look to manually remove or on occasions a specific removal tool has been created which does a much better job - though its vital the instructions given are followed to the letter.
The various spyware stuff does a reasonable job of blocking stuff before it happens (most significantly guarding against unauthorised registry changes) but to be honest most problems are caused by bad practice - logging on with accounts with admin privs, not applying windows updates, not running behind a firewall and running dodgy stuff youve downloaded like cracks and pirate software.
